The Ethiopian Medical Laboratory Association (EMI-A) is a professional association aimed to contribute in the promotion of a systematic health laboratory services based on the globally recognized standards and practices for the benefit of patients, community, healthcare providers, government and the nation at large.

Laboratory service is one of the three pillars of healthcare services along with public health and clinical services in providing major evidences in public health and clinical interventions. Laboratory is generating more than 70% of evidences for diagnoses, treatment decisions, treatment follow-ups, surveillance activities, and public health planning and interventions rely on output from Health Laboratory services. This has been demonstrated for  decades in developed nations while practicing Evidence Based Medicine (EBM) and getting more crucial when the world is gearing towards the practice of Precision Medicine. Laboratory services are an essential component of a comprehensive health-care system by providing the required diagnostic support to curative and preventive health services, health promotion activities and research. These are essential to guide appropriate treatment and rational use of essential drugs, and for surveillance and control of diseases of public health concern. Laboratory services may be utilized effectively at every level of health care including the primary level, where many common diseases and diseases with outbreak potential may be diagnosed using basic laboratory tests. Therefore, strengthening national laboratory capacity is a critical step in improved quality and equitable healthcare delivery with an operationalized systematic manner that we have been proposing and promoting so far.

Based on these compelling practical evidences for healthcare delivery requirements, EMI-A has organized its annual conference (AC), continuing professional development (CPD) along with In-Vitro Diagnostic exhibition’s (IVDE) event of the year 2023 under the theme of
